Applied Cryptography
Efficient and secure instantiation of quantum-resistant schemes and other advanced cryptosystems including lattice-, code- and hash-based cryptography, in software and hardware.
Professor for Security Engineering
I work on making cryptography secure in practice: efficient quantum-secure implementations, hardware security and security-oriented design flows.
I am professor and head of the Chair for Security Engineering in the Faculty of Computer Science at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. I am also a co-speaker of the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security (HGI) and principal investigator in the Cluster of Excellence CASA, “Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries”.
My work sits at the boundary between cryptography and engineering: how advanced cryptographic algorithms can be implemented efficiently and securely on embedded processors, FPGAs and ASICs, and how such implementations can be protected against complex and low-level attacks, such as side-channel analysis and fault injection.
Together with Christof Paar and Jan Pelzl, I wrote the textbook Understanding Cryptography, whose second edition adds post-quantum cryptography.
My research and that of my group falls into four connected areas.
Efficient and secure instantiation of quantum-resistant schemes and other advanced cryptosystems including lattice-, code- and hash-based cryptography, in software and hardware.
Side-channel analysis, fault injection and provably secure countermeasures such as masking, including methods and frameworks for validating them.
Secure hardware architectures on FPGAs and ASICs, Security-centered EDA flows, security verification and protection against manipulation and reverse engineering.
Lightweight, efficient and secure processor design for resource-constrained and cyber-physical applications, from sensors to automotive and industrial controllers.

CONVOLVE strengthens Europe's position in the design of smart edge processors by addressing the whole design stack, from application, model and compiler down to system architecture, micro-architecture, circuit and device. Our focus is on secure processors and post-quantum cryptography.

A student competition in open-source chip design. We prepare a fully open toolchain, EDA software and process design kit, for 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS technology and extend it with formal verification of security properties. Students bring up and evaluate their own fabricated chips. The aim is an annual competition with 50 to 100 teams, to train the chip designers Europe needs.
